Weekly News Update May 4th - 8th

Over the past 7 Days Ryston Runners have been busy both on the road and track, with the Dereham 10 Mile County Championships Road Race, Marathon's, Start of the EMAC Track and Field Season & Eastern Young Athletics League in Peterborough

Dereham 10 Mile

A dozen Ryston Runners took to the roads of Dereham in the annual 10 mile race, featuring the Norfolk County Championships. Some struggled with the heat but there were impressive and prizewinning results nonetheless.

The overall race winner was Ryston second claimer Danny Rock, who ran 58:22. First in in Ryston colours was Warren Armstrong (M40) 6th overall in 62:32. The next finishers were Nic Bensley (M45/ 9thoverall/63:38), Pete Johnson (1st M60/ 20th overall/66:21) and Simon Able (M45/ 29th/ 67:44) these 4 together took team honours in the Male Veteran category.

As well as Pete Johnson, individual honours were taken by Jane Ashby (1st W65/93:06) and Sarah Partridge, (3rd W50/98:59).

Halstead Marathon

Two other club members, deeming 10 miles too little, ran in the Halstead Marathon.

Eamonn McCusker, a regular at this event despite noting that this hilly course is the venue for all his worst marathon times, lost almost half an hour over the second half as the unaccustomed heat took its toll, finishing in 4:12:15, still good enough to claim first place in the M60 category. Barry Smith, celebrating his birthday with this run finished in 4:27.

EMAC – Kings Lynn

Ryston newly named masters athletes had their first match of their 2016 Track & Field League season on Wednesday at Lynnsport. Ryston came out winners in both the men's and women's competitions, ahead of West Norfolk AC, Cambridge & Coleridge AC and newly formed Suffolk Team.

Several club age group records were broken or newly established, including by Dan Yellop in the M35 Shot Putt, Jo Isbill in W50 Pole Vault, Wendy Fisher and Jane Ashby in 300m  W50 and W65 respectively, and Paul Oakes, a second claim member, setting new marks in Hammer Throw and Pole Vault for the M60 age group, the latter with his best vault for over 3 years. Matt Pyatt all but equalled his club M35 3000m record, while his wife Lisa, in her debut match in this league, performed well.

There was a plethora of event wins for Ryston including  100m M35 Dan Yellop, W35 Tanya Daniels, W50 Karen Wood, W60 Gill Hart;  400m M35 Nic Bensley, W35 Marie French (EMAC debut); 3000m M35 Matt Pyatt, M50 Tony Savage, M60 Pete Johnson, W60 Jane Ashby; 1000mW Paul Firmage, Peter Duhig, Cath Duhig;  Hammer Throw M35 Ian Hogarth, M50 David Lane, M60 Paul Oakes, W35 Tanya Daniels; Shot Putt M35 Dan Yellop, M60 Paul Oakes, W35 Tanya Daniels, W60 Marlene Simmonds; Long Jump M35 Paul Harrison, M50 David Lane, W35 Tanya Daniels, W50 Karen Wood, W60 Marlene Simmonds;  Poe Vault M35 Ian Hogarth, M50 Paul Oakes, W50 Jo Isbill; 4 x 100m relay M50, W35 and W50.

Thanks to all the helpers including Sue Smith not only completed her customary long list of events but also found time to mind the tea stall, along with similarly busily employed M70 athlete Jeff Reed.  With Beck and Sue Tuff on results, Gareth & Gaye timekeeping, and several other Ryston members helping with officiating and of course Helen Reed for team managing the whole thing.

Eastern Young Athletics League - Peterborough

8 Ryston Junior athletes featured in a combined Norfolk team at the EYAL fixture in Peterborough on Sunday against 6 other clubs from the Eastern Region.

In the Long Jump Liam achieved a PB in Long Jump (3.75m) to finish 4th and equalled his 100m best time (14.8 sec 3rd). Kit ran his first ever 800m and placed 2nd in his race in 2:34.5. He was 4th in the 75m Hurdles  in 15.5. Kit and Liam were half of the U13B 4 x 100m relay team that finished third.

Robert ran PB’s in both of the sprints running 26.90 in the U15B 200m and 13.3 in the 100m.

Mia(U13G)  as 2nd in her heat and 7th overall in her 800m event (2.49.7) and achieved a 14cm PB in Long Jump, reaching out to 3.54m.Lily Teasdale did a new Shot Putt PB (4.066m), also ran 100m and 200m. Saffron Teasdale contested Long Jump, Discus and 1500m in U15G competition. Bea Honeybone jumped 1:13m in her first ever high jump competition and (16.3 sec) in her first 100m sprint as well as setting a new Long Jump best of 3.73
