How to get there & race course sketch
History of the event.
The event was initially set up to help raise funds for the Stoke Ferry Community School, in West Norfolk, by Peter Duhig - one of the parents - in 1982. Over the years, Peter included a 10K; Marathon and a 5K Fun Run. In recent years the more popular Marathon; Half Marathon & Fun Run became the WISSEY VALLEY RACES and was well supported for a rural event.
Historically the event was staged from Stoke Ferry Community School, in Stoke Ferry, situated in West Norfolk.
The Wissey Valley Races had, for many years, incorporated the Norfolk Marathon Championships and has also staged a National Veterans Marathon Championship and a number of Eastern Veterans Half Marathon Regional Championships.
The original course had, over the years, slight changes and deviations to accommodate various situations but had generally remained the same until 1999. The new changes included a new venue and a new course. It also, sadly, saw the departure of the Norfolk Marathon Championships.
The new venue is in Oxborough, a delightful picturesque village - about 4 miles east of Stoke Ferry - well known locally for its fine example of English Heritage in Oxburgh Hall; owned by the National Trust; situated only a hundred metres away from the new Race Headquarters.
The new course covers about 7 miles of the old course. The start is only 150 metres away from the race centre and is a predominately anti-clockwise, one-lap race. The route away from the main roads and starts at Oxborough proceeding onto Beachamwell, going through Barton Bendish and Boughton finishing back in Oxborough - at the race centre.
